Item groups

An item group is used to create a hierarchy through which individual items (CIs) can be organized into a multi-level tree structure. An item group does not contain any settings for the items themselves, but you can configure its icon, slug, parent group, and other auxiliary data.

Creating and editing a group

If the relevant group has not been defined, you can create a new group by clicking the button and then selecting + Create Group in the CMDB → List of Items section on the left. You can also create a new group directly in the tree structure on the left. The group is created directly at the selected position in the hierarchy either by right-clicking on the desired group and selecting the option Create Group, or by selecting this option from the context menu on the selected group’s row.

You can edit an existing group by selecting Detail from the context menu or by right-clicking on the row of the desired group.

Meaning of the fields in the group form

The form for creating/editing a group of items contains the following fields:

  • Name – the name of the main group under which it will appear in the application’s selection menus; in a multilingual environment, it is possible to add a translation.
  • Descriptionoptional, allows you to enter a description for the group.
  • Parent Group – used to select an existing group under which the group being created or edited is nested. Setting this option defines the group’s direct location within the configuration management database (CMDB) hierarchy.
  • Slug (alias) – represents an alias for an item in an easily readable form, used in API calls instead of the ID. The term used must not contain diacritics or spaces and is case-sensitive – it distinguishes between uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Thumbnailenable / disable – option to assign an icon to a given group and thus visually distinguish it. The icon can be customized by selecting a color and symbol.

The saved group record displays the Item types tab, which contains a list of types belonging to the selected group. A group can only be deleted if no item types or specific items (CI) are linked to it.
